A Technology – changed our world
>> Oct 26, 2010
Google is a name by which you can able to simplify all your question or confusions. It was started as a research project by Larry page & Sergey Brin in 1996 at Stanford University in California. They changed the name to Google which was originated from a misspelling of the word "googol - the number one followed by one hundred zeros” meant to signify the amount of information the search engine was to handle. Originally, Google ran under the Stanford University website, with the domain google.stanford.edu.
Google began selling advertisements associated with search keywords in Mar’1999. Keywords were sold based on a combination of price bids and click-through. Did you know that 99% of Google's revenue is derived from its advertising programs. Google has forced various innovations in the online advertising market that helped make them one of the biggest advertisers in the market.
This was just a brief introduction of Google, but I would like to give some idea about the technology that makes Google successful. Nowadays, we all are habitual about Google applications like Google Search, Google Analytics, Google Adsense, Google Docs, Google Code, Blogger, Orkut and many more.

· On-page Optimization Techniques
· Off Page Optimization Techniques
Let us start with on page optimization and know how we can make it possible. There are various steps which are listed below:
ü HTML Head Tags optimization
ü URL optimization
ü Body Tags optimization
ü Internal Links and Image optimization
ü Page Architecture
HTML Head Tags (Meta Tags) optimization:
Page Title
Optimal Length:
3 - 7 words
Example: Patni Website
Patni Home – Patni India
Product Engineering Home page
“Product Engineering Services” + Country Name
Service offering page
Patni + “Application Development” + Country Name
Patni + “IT Governance” + Country Name
Meta Description Tag
Significance:
Critical for internal search and external search engines
Optimal Length:
200 characters or less, including spaces.
Sample:
Meta Keywords Tag
Overview:
The Meta keywords tag is used for search engine for two purposes:
ü To match search terms with pages that may not have the terms in the title or content, such as the plural form of terms, synonyms, and misspellings
ü To rank the results by associating terms with a page and improve the relevancy score, provide relevant, meaningful keywords and synonyms in the keywords meta tag.
Significance:
Critical for search engine
Optimal Length:
1000 characters or less.
Recommendation:
When adding keywords please take care of the following:
ü Do not include keywords and key phrases NOT found in the web page text.
ü Put the most important and most relevant terms at the beginning of the list.
ü Include keywords that reflect the content of the page.
ü Include singular and plural forms of important terms; search engines consider them as different terms.
ü Do not repeat any word more than 3 times.
ü Use acronyms and spell out the acronym as well.
ü Separate keywords and phrases with commas to help you organize the terms. However, some search engines treat all punctuation as a space.
ü Put in a maximum of 7 misspellings of the product name. For example, misspellings should include: sliver, silver, slver, svlr.
ü Enter keywords in the national language of the page. English terms can be included in a page if they are commonly used in the country or language.
ü Do not use keywords that violate third party intellectual property rights, such as trademarks and service marks of competitors.
Sample:
URL optimization (URL STRUCTURE & NAMING CONVENTION)
URLs that are promoted in public and not used as hyperlinks are not required to follow the URL Structure and Naming Convention for SEO Optimization.
Directory Structure
Sites should be architected to keep high-value pages at the first or second directory levels. Pages closest to the root directory are considered by search engines as the most important pages, and are weighted accordingly by the search engine algorithms.
Short, Human-Readable URLs
Keep URL’s short (less than 100 characters are good, even less is better). Human readable, short URLs positively affect usability (they are easier to remember/copy and paste).
Example:
http:// www.patni.com/application-development/overview.aspx
Keywords in URLs
Keywords in URLs will help a Search Engine to determine the topic(s) of a page when used properly, and rank that page better for those keywords. Separate multiple keywords with hyphens. Hyphens have been found to have the most search engine friendly separators, followed by underscores and plus signs.
Example URL with Keywords:
http://patni.com/web-technology-solutions/overview.aspx
So here we discovered some important things to keep in our mind when we are going to promote our website…
We have still so many other points in On-Page Optimization like Body Tags optimization, Internal Links and Image optimization, Page Architecture. I will update you later on about the same…
